The reading room
Bath · 2024
Room for the books. A place to sit with one.

The room.
Two alcoves and a window wall could do more, without making the room feel like storage. The existing chimney breast and the proportions around it set the starting point.
The furniture.
A pair of painted bookcases gives the chimney breast its own space. Closed cupboards hold the less presentable things below, while adjustable shelving lets the collection change. An oak window seat brings the joinery back to the people using the room.

Made to the wall, not merely placed against it.
The cupboard divisions, shelf spacing and painted finish were considered as part of one elevation. Small brass knobs sit quietly against the deep-plum cabinetry.
